Before examining a historic neon sign, disconnect it from power and allow a qualified electrical specialist to confirm that it is safe to approach. Begin with photographs of the entire sign, including its mounting points, transformer enclosure, and surrounding structure. Then record each glass tube by color, diameter, and position. Look for hairline fractures, darkened electrodes, flaking paint, corroded supports, and previous repairs. Do not clean or reposition loose components during this first survey. Dust, faded lettering, and hand-painted registration marks may contain evidence of the sign maker's original process. Your goal is not to make the object look new. It is to create an accurate condition record that helps conservators distinguish original material from later alterations and select the least invasive treatment.
Attention, night staff. Pollination chamber three will enter its low-light cycle in ten minutes. Please secure all specimen drawers and clear the misting aisle. The next climate check begins at midnight.
